Businesses operating in multiple States and Union Territories often need to obtain separate GST registrations under the same PAN. Previously, applicants had to provide common business and promoter-related information separately for each State or UT registration application, resulting in repetitive data entry.

To simplify this process, the GST Common Portal has introduced a new Multistate Registration Facility, as announced on October 1, 2026. This functionality allows taxpayers to apply for GST registration in multiple States/UTs simultaneously under the same PAN.

Currently, this facility is available only to Normal Taxpayers. The new functionality aims to reduce repetitive information entry and make the GST registration process more convenient.

What Is the GST Multistate Registration Facility?

The Multistate Registration Facility is a new functionality available on the GST Common Portal that enables taxpayers to apply for registration in multiple States or Union Territories simultaneously using the same PAN.

Instead of entering common registration details separately for every State or UT, applicants can submit the common information once through a Master TRN.

After submitting the common information, individual TRNs are generated for each selected State or UT, allowing applicants to complete the respective registration applications.

How Does the GST Multistate Registration Process Work?

The new functionality follows a structured process involving State selection, common information submission and individual State-wise application completion.

1. Select Multiple States or Union Territories

A new Multistate Registration tab has been introduced on the homepage of the GST Common Portal.

Taxpayers seeking registration in multiple States or UTs under the same PAN can select all the required locations through this tab.

Once the required States/UTs are selected, the portal generates a Master TRN.

2. Submit Common Registration Information (CRI)

Using the Master TRN, applicants can provide their Common Registration Information (CRI).

The common information includes:

  • Business Details
  • Promoter/Partner Details
  • Authorised Signatory Details
  • Authorised Representative Details
  • Goods and Services Details

Important: The Master TRN must be submitted within 15 days.

3. Individual TRNs Are Generated

Once the Common Registration Information is submitted, the GST portal generates individual TRNs for each selected State or Union Territory.

The common information already submitted through the CRI is automatically populated in the respective individual TRN applications.

Applicants can also edit the auto-populated common information, wherever required.

4. Complete State-Specific Registration Details

After the individual TRNs are generated, applicants must provide the remaining information required for each State or UT registration.

This includes:

  • Principal Place of Business (PPoB)
  • Additional Place of Business (APoB)
  • State-specific Information
  • Aadhaar Authentication

These details must be completed separately for the respective State or UT applications.

Who Can Use the GST Multistate Registration Facility?

The facility is intended for taxpayers who need GST registration in multiple States or Union Territories under the same PAN.

However, the functionality is currently available only to Normal Taxpayers.

Other taxpayer categories are not covered under the facility as per the advisory dated October 1, 2026.

What Are the Benefits of the New Multistate Registration Facility?

The introduction of the Multistate Registration functionality offers several operational benefits for businesses requiring GST registration across multiple locations.

Reduced Repetitive Data Entry

Businesses no longer need to enter common registration information separately for every State or UT application.

Simplified Registration Process

Applicants can select multiple States/UTs simultaneously and submit common information through a single Master TRN.

Centralised Common Information Submission

Business details, promoter/partner details, authorised signatory information and other common particulars can be submitted through the Common Registration Information (CRI).

Improved Ease of Doing Business

By reducing repetitive information entry and simplifying the application process, the new functionality facilitates a more convenient GST registration experience for businesses operating across multiple States.

Note: Important Points Taxpayers Should Know

  • The facility is available on the GST Common Portal.
  • Applicants can select multiple States/UTs under the same PAN.
  • Currently, only Normal Taxpayers can use this functionality.
  • A Master TRN is generated after selecting the required States/UTs.
  • Common Registration Information must be submitted within 15 days.
  • Individual TRNs are generated after CRI submission.
  • Common information is auto-populated in individual applications but remains editable.
  • State-specific details and Aadhaar authentication must be completed separately.

Conclusion

The introduction of the GST Multistate Registration Facility is a step towards simplifying the GST registration process for businesses operating across multiple States and Union Territories.

With the Master TRN and Common Registration Information mechanism, applicants can avoid repetitive data entry and provide common business details through a single process. This functionality is expected to make multi-state GST registration more streamlined and support ease of doing business.

Businesses planning to obtain GST registration in multiple States should understand the new process and ensure that the Master TRN is submitted within the prescribed 15-day period.
